about.

Born in Japan. Graduated from Tama Art University in 2007 with a degree in textile design from the Department of Production Design.

Naoya Watabe is an artist based in Tokyo. With a background in textile techniques, he skillfully combines dyeing and installations, drawing inspiration from themes such as life, consumption, and waste. He actively incorporates materials and methods that are not yet well-established, adopting a highly experimental approach. By using familiar materials, he aims to make their powerful presence intuitively felt, allowing viewers to deeply resonate with them. Through his dyed works, he explores the changes in color and uncovers the chemical phenomena embedded within. The intersection of texture changes and chemical reactions generates new expressions, aiming to leave a strong visual and tactile impression. Dyeing as a medium allows not only dyes but also stains and dirt, among other things, to be used for expression, which Watanabe believes can reflect the fundamental existence of humans. Therefore, he strives to delve deeply into this expression, attempting to create works that transcend the boundaries between material and sensation.
